Battersea – Blore Close | SIP Residential Apartments Project

SIPBuild UK worked with builders JMH Group to supply and fit a timber frame and structural insulated panels (SIPs) throughout the top four floors of a high-spec new build at Nine Elms in the borough of Wandsworth, south – west London.

The build was part of one of the biggest regeneration contracts in Europe, which includes a town centre complex at Battersea Power Station and construction of a new US Embassy.

It was the first time JMH Group had commissioned SIP technology. It complimented the ground floor which was built with steel, its usual material of choice.

JMH Group chairman Marin Jakisic chose SIPs because the site was tight for traditional build methods, they are a cost-effective way to meet the code level 4 sustainability regulations for new builds and for their insulating and acoustic properties.

Off-site construction and quick installation created less pollution and disruption for surrounding residents and it meant costs were kept down in terms of labour and project timeframe.

Work began on the Blore Close site in late January and SIPBuild UK was on site during March to fit a timber frame across the top four floors, build a timber lift shaft and install SIPs across four levels.

External walls were given a brick outer face. The Blore Close building is part of a massive development on the south bank of the Thames, which will see 16,000 new homes buid and enough business space to support 25,000 jobs.

It includes a new park running from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station and a new tube stop on the Northern Line.

The centrepiece will be the £650m US embassy, an 11-storey cube made of glass, expected to open for business in 2017.
